First band to reach 1 million without distribution
November 1, 2011 (Howling Monkey, CA) – To the astonishment of an entire tribe, Moonalice’s single “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” has been downloaded more than 1 million times since its introduction on November 13, 2009. The one millionth download occurred at precisely 4:20pm PT on October 4, 2011.
As a band without a label, Moonalice is the first to achieve one million downloads of a song from its own servers. This accomplishment has been submitted for confirmation to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
Written by Ann McNamee, G.E. Smith, Anonymous, and Roger McNamee, “It’s 4:20 Somewhere,” was recorded and mixed by Dave Way, and appears on the Moonalice EP, “Dave’s Way #1”, which was released January 15, 2011. The FLAC version can be downloaded for free at http://moonalice.bit.ly/2uZpcY
“It’s 4:20 Somewhere” is already the first song to qualify for the MIAA’s coveted Golden Download Award, which signifies 420,000 total downloads.
Moonalice is a San Francisco-based band featuring John Molo on drums, Barry Sless on lead guitar, Pete Sears on bass, guitar and keyboards, Ann McNamee on bass and keyboards, and Chubby Wombat Moonalice on bass and guitar. Everyone sings.
Reached for comment while half asleep, Chubby Wombat Moonalice said, “Seems like a lot of downloads to me. Thank goodness they were free. Otherwise, we would have had to hire an accountant.”
To celebrate the success of the single, Moonalice is touring nationally.
Moonalice has long pioneered the use of social networks and other technology. The band invented the Twittercast concert, where it shares links to songs for an entire show, either live or after the fact. Moonalice has done 100 Twittercasts (and Facecasts, as the Facebook equivalent is known) and also broadcasts a song an hour over Twitter via Moonalice Radio. Moonalice is also the first band to offer free LIVE videocasts in HD of (nearly) every show. These shows are available in HTML 5 without an app on iPhones and iPads. The band’s archive of more than 400 shows of audio and 60 of video can be found on its website; all Moonalice content can be enjoyed on iPhone, iPad, and Android without an app.
On the web, Moonalice can be found at http://www.moonalice.com, as well as on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/moonalice) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/moonalice).
